Another long weekend, another chance to think about staying safe on the highways. RCMP Constable Shawn Smith says with Thanksgiving here folks need to remember the rules of the road, especially with increased traffic over the holiday.

Smith notes it's always a good idea to watch your speed, adding there will be checkstops throughout the province so you never know when you might come across one. He adds make sure your seatbelts are fastened and your driver's licence is up to date. Smith says people also need to be mindful of the new law regarding cell phone use behind the wheel, noting it is illegal to text or talk while you're driving unless you're using hands-free technology.

He adds the most important thing to remember is never drink and drive, so if your holiday plans include imbibing make sure you have a designated driver so everyone will get home safely.
