What's happening with the Canadian crop is a key issue for the rest of the world according to the Federal Agriculture Minister. A challenging growing season has created significant variability in this year's crop.

"Without exception, they're all saying 'can you guarantee us supply?'", says Gerry Ritz. "Everybody is siezed with food security and sustainability around the world. We're seeing growing demand for Canadian product."

He says Canada has the capability to continue to grow when it comes to agricultural trade with improvement in areas like biotechnology.

Ritz discussed a number of other current ag issues with Golden West Online's Glenda Lee Allen, including the debate over the sale of Potash Corp to BHP Billiton. "That decision will be coming down November 3rd when Tony Clement will be making that announcement. There's a process in place and we'll look forward to the results." Both the Saskatchewan government and the federal Liberals have spoken out against the deal. Liberal MP Ralph Goodale says allowing the sale of Potash Corp to a foreign buyer would put jobs, investment and public revenues at risk.

Beef market access to Japan was another topic Ritz was willing to address. "We're still stuck at that 22 month level but they've given us every indication that they're serious about moving forward," he says. "It's a matter of time."
