Many towns hold a fair every year but for some that’s getting more difficult because of the demand on the volunteers.

Saturday, June 17th is fair day in Ninette and the Pelican Lake Ag. Society has been struggling to find volunteers to keep the fair going. “We had a few people step forward to help this year which is great, but we are still struggling, and our numbers are down,” said secretary-treasurer Michelle Neufeld.

“We’re finding it hard to get new people to step up and I totally understand because of family commitments and finding the time. Volunteering does cost money in the end so it’s understandable.”

Pelican Lake Ag Society will host a one-day fair June 17th in Ninette. The day includes a pancake breakfast, gymkhana horse show, parade, children’s activities, trade show and boot sale, wagon rides and more.

“We’ve lined up a full program and it starts with the pancake breakfast at 8:30.”

Once this year’s fair draws to a close the fair board will sit down to talk about the future of the event.

“That’s a decision we’ll have to make following this fair. Some of our volunteers are burnt out and it’s not realistic to expect a small group of people to host an event of this scale. It will definitely be a hard conversation we have after the event.”

Neufeld says the pandemic wasn’t a factor because volunteer support had started to dwindle before 2020.
