We've been sharing with you, the race against time of the people in Melita and Souris who are preparing for the crest of the Souris River, the third this will occur in 2011.  I spent yesterday in Souris for a first hand look, and to join the many other volunteers.  Our visit began at the Fire Hall where all of the emergency response is coordinated, and it was there we met Daryl Jackson, the mayor who was lending a hand, wherever it was necessary

Daryl did add that volunteers are still welcome, and we are to call the town office to volunteer.  That would also be the case in Melita and Wawanesa. Oh, if it rings a few times, don't be surprized, because when we stopped in, the staff was dealing with a lot of calls!! We spent our volunteer time loading sandbags for use down at the riverbank. Our crew included Murray Arnold who was handling the forklift. Murray lives north of Souris, and for him, the farm is not working out that well these days.

News team member Tara Funke was also lending a hand, pitching in with some recent arrivals, who were well experienced with assisting in times of disaster. She and the firefighters took advantage of a break in the shade to catch up on their role.  Here is how Tyler Zubriski described their duties

I also brought the camera along as we delivered sandbags to the riverbank, and I think you'll agree, there is a lot of activity, a kind of quiet determination, that will help the community win this battle.
