The Wawanesa Brewers have moved into a tie with the Reston Rockets for the South West Baseball League's fourth and final playoff spot. Dawson Cullen had three hits and scored a pair of runs as Wawanesa defeated Reston 6-4. The Brewers and Rockets have identical 6-6 records. The Deloraine Royals plated two runs in the top of the eighth inning and beat the Virden Oilers 6-4. Kyle Breemersch drove in four runs for the Royals who are in third place at 9-5. 


Baseball Manitoba's Provincial 11U Championships begin today. Hartney will represent Oil Dome at the Tier One championship in Mitchell. Virden is at the Tier Two championship hosted by Reston and Deloraine will join the host Boissevain Centennials at the Tier Three championship.


Softball Manitoba's Provincial U15 A Championship begins today. Thirty teams are in Steinbach including Virden, Deloraine, Wawanesa and Hamiota. The Provincial U13 A Championship that was rained out on the Canada Day long weekend will take place this weekend in Portage la Prairie. Twenty-six teams are competing including Wawanesa, Virden and Glenboro.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes wrapped up their nine-game road trip with a 17-7 victory over the Sioux City Explorers. Roby Enríquez homered twice and Ramón Bramasco and Rob Emery also went deep in Winnipeg's nine-run first inning. The Fish will open a three-game weekend series against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks tonight at Blue Cross Park.


Chris Streveler will be the starting quarterback tonight (7:30 p.m.) when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the Ottawa RedBlacks. Zach Collaros, who was injured in Winnipeg's 22-19 overtime loss to the Calgary Stampeders in week four is listed on the depth chart but will not dress. Receiver Myron Mitchell and fullback Michael Chris-Ike are on the game day roster. Off are defensive back Marquise Bridges and receiver Jeremy Murphy. The Blue Bombers have lost their last three games by a combined nine points.


Dave Cameron will be back behind the Canadian bench at the 2025 World Junior Hockey Championship in Ottawa. Cameron was head coach of the Canadian team that won the junior title in 2022. Canada is looking to rebound after losing in the quarterfinals at the 2024 tournament in Sweden. 


Round one of Golf Manitoba's Provincial Women's Amateur Championship and the Provincial Men's Mid-Amateur championship at Minnedosa was suspended due to dangerous weather. 2020 champion Allan McDonald of Breezy Bend has the clubhouse lead in the Mid-Am as he was 10-under par 62. McDonald's round included 11 birdies, six pars and a bogey on the par four 18th hole. Thomas Friesen of Wheat City was two-under par 70. Seven members of Shilo are in the field.  Nolan Tutkaluk was 71; Drew Jones was even par 72; Brad Pardy was 73; Jake Cullen is one-under through 17 holes; Braydon Nault is plus one through 15; Trevor Dickie is plus five through 11 and Chris Sitko is plus six through 16 holes. Ross Sheard of Brandon was 74. Addison Kartusch of St. Charles has the lead in the Women's Amateur. Kartusch was even par through nine holes when play was suspended. Cala Korman of Killarney is plus three through eight holes; Payton Oakden of Brandon is plus five through eight and Payton Bailey of Wheat City is plus six through six holes. 


Hayden Springer, who won the Manitoba Open last August at the Southwood Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg, shot a 59 to open the John Deere Classic for the 14th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history. Springer finished with an eagle and a birdie for a two-shot lead over Sami Valimaki.


Canada will face Venezuela tonight in Arlington, Texas in the quarterfinals of Copa America. Canada is No. 48 in the current FIFA world rankings while Venezuela is 54th. The winner advances to the semifinals against Argentina on July 9th in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Argentina defeated Ecuador 4-2 on penalty kicks Thursday in Houston.
