The Southwest Cougars season is on the line tonight in Brandon. Cole Temple had two goals and an assist as the Wheat Kings defeated Southwest 6-3 in Souris and now lead the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League's best-of-five quarterfinal two games to none. Nicholas Cullen, Jack Clark and Kelby Diehl did the goal scoring for the Cougars. 


The Killarney/Wawanesa Raiders are into round two of the Westman High School Hockey League playoffs. Josh Archambault and Carter Bartley scored two goals each as the Raiders downed Hamiota/Rivers/Elton/Strathclair 7-2 and swept the best-of-three quarterfinal in two straight. Colby Asselstine had two goals and an assist as Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn beat Neepawa 5-2 and evened that series at a game apiece. Owen Martyniuk made 21 saves as Swan Valley downed Vincent Massey 5-3 in game one of their series. 


The Tiger Hills Hockey League division finals begin next Friday in Gladstone and Elkhorn. The Lakers will face the Minnedosa Bombers in the East Division final and the Miniota/Elkhorn C-Hawks take on the Killarney Shamrocks in the West final. Gladstone, Minnedosa, Miniota/Elkhorn and Killarney are undefeated in the playoffs having swept their respective division quarterfinal and semifinal series.


Hockey Manitoba Provincial Championships on this weekend include the CO-ED Under-15 Rural C in Melita. The Female Under-18 Rural A Championship is in Elkhorn/McCauley. The CO-ED Under-11 Rural C Championship is in Hartney.


Team Toba athletes earned three medals Thursday at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island. Khloé Lessard-Kulchyski of Richer captured silver in fencing's sabre event and Matias Enciso of Winnipeg won bronze in fencing's épée event. Daniel Ekosky of Selkirk took bronze in judo's -81kg event. Manitoba's medal count is 12 with three gold, five silver and four bronze.


The Brier begins tonight in London, Ontario. Defending champion Brad Gushue will take on 2020 World Junior champion Jacques Gauthier of BC on the opening draw. Both Manitoba teams play their round robin openers Saturday afternoon. Matt Dunstone will meet Kelly Knapp of Saskatchewan and Reid Carruthers will face Tanner Horgan of Northern Ontario.
