The Provincial High School Golf championships begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. at Minnewasta in Morden. Ashton Cuvelier, Kieran DeBacker, Russell Outhwaite and Wyatt Sunaert of Killarney are representing Zone 9. The zone is not sending a girls team to the provincials but Kala Korman of Killarney is competing. 


The quarterfinals take place today at the Centennial Cup National Junior "A" Hockey Championship in Estevan. The Flin Flon Bombers meet the Pickering Panthers (5 p.m.) and the Summerside Western Capitals face College Francais de Longueuil (8:30 p.m.). The Turnbull Trophy champion Dauphin Kings and the Brooks Bandits have a bye to the semifinals.


Team Canada will face the Czech Republic Saturday in the semifinals at the World Men's Hockey Championship in Finland. Drake Batherson scored  a power play goal 43 seconds into overtime as Canada rallied for a 4-3 victory over Sweden in the quarterfinals. Matthew Barzal and Pierre-Luc Dubois scored 30 seconds apart late in the third period to tie the game at 3-3. Ryan Graves had the other Canadian goal. The United States will meet Finland in the other semi.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers play their pre-season opener tonight (7:30 p.m.) against the Edmonton Elks at IG Field. Starting quarterback Zach Collaros will not play. CFL veteran Dakota Prukop, last year’s No. 3 Dru Brown, newcomer Joe Mancuso and University of Manitoba product Jackson Tachinski, part of the U Sports Canadian Quarterback Internship program, will all dress for the game. The Bombers have 98 players on their training camp roster and have to cut down to 75 players on Saturday.


The CFL Players' Association ratified its new collective bargaining agreement with the league. The announcement was made via email with the players' vote coming hours after the two sides hammered out a seven-year tentative agreement. The ratification came two days after commissioner Randy Ambrosie unveiled the league's final offer to its players.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped an 8-4 decision to Sioux Falls. Jabari Henry homered twice for the Canaries including a three-run shot in the bottom of the eighth inning which extended Sioux Falls' lead to 8-3. Hidekel Gonzalez went deep for the Goldeyes who wrap up their 10-game road trip with a weekend series against the Saltdogs in Lincoln.
