The Virden Oil Capitals play their third of five pre-season games tonight when they meet the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Estevan Bruins at Affinity Place. Virden will also host the Dauphin Kings on Sunday and the Portage Terriers on Monday. The Oil Capitals will begin the 2023-24 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season one week from today against the defending Turnbull Cup champion Steinbach Pistons.


The Winnipeg Jets face the Edmonton Oilers tonight at the 2023 Young Stars Classic in Penticton. The Jets will also take on the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday and the Calgary Flames on Monday. A trio of Winnipeg’s recent first round selects in the NHL Draft; Chaz Lucius (2021), Brad Lambert (2022) and Colby Barlow (2023) are on the Jets Young Stars roster. Free agent invite forward Mark Liwiski of Dauphin is the lone Manitoban on the roster.


Canada Soccer says the women’s team won’t be taking part in the upcoming Pan American Games. The games – which run in Chile this year – start and finish after the FIFA international windows. Canada coach Bev Priestman says she instead hopes to play games in those windows. Women’s soccer was added to the Pan Am schedule in 1999 in Winnipeg and the Canadian women took part in five straight Games before sitting out in 2019 due to the FIFA World Cup.


Kristian Hammerback of Winnipeg recorded 29 points and is in a tie for 23rd place heading into the final round of the Men’s Net Stableford division at the 2023 Canadian All Abilities Championship in Kamloops, British Columbia. The third playing of the national championship is contested as a 36-hole competition and features players with neurological, intellectual, sensory, and physical impairments.
