Zone 9 champions Brodie Cameron, Dexen Routledge, Reed McGrath and Eric Berger along with Joelle Barkley, Courtney Cochrane, Jaedyn Hoemsen and Ceanna Mitchell of the Virden Bears will be competing at the Provincial High School Golf Championship today at the Pleasant Valley golf course in Belmont. Clair Mercx of Boissevain also qualified for the provincials and will be playing at Pleasant Valley.


The Southwest Cougars play their 2023-24 Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season opener tonight against the Pembina Valley Hawks in Morden. The Cougars home opener is Saturday night in Souris against the Hawks.


The Winnipeg Jets play their fourth of six exhibition games tonight when they meet the Senators in Ottawa. The Jets are coming off a 3-2 shootout loss to the Calgary Flames Wednesday night at Canada Life Centre.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers face the Toronto Argonauts at IG Field and the B.C. Lions host the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Bombers and Lions are 10-4 and tied for top spot in the CFL West. The defending Grey Cup champion Argos are 12-1 and have clinched first place in the East. The Blue Bombers have made three roster moves. Defensive ends Jackson Jeffcoat and Thiadric Hansen along with defensive back Jake Kelly are in while defensive end Celestin Haba, linebacker Les Maruo and defensive tackle Tanner Schmekel are out and have been moved to the practice roster.


Manitoba champions Matt Dunstone and Jennifer Jones have joined Kerri Einarson, Kaitlyn Lawes, Reid Carruthers and Ryan Wiebe in the Elite 8 at the 2023 PointsBet Invitational in Oakville, Ontario. Dunstone defeated Sam Mooibroek of Wilfrid Laurier University 10-5 while Jones beat Myla Plett of Sherwood Park 10-6. Dunstone will face Karsten Sturmay of St. Albert; Carruthers will take on Rylan Kleiter of Saskatoon; Wiebe will meet reigning Brier champion Brad Gushue of St. John’s; Jones will face Christina Black of Dartmouth; Einarson will take on Kayla Skrlik of Calgary and Lawes will meet Clancy Grandy of Vancouver.
