The Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League champion Brandon Wheat Kings play their preliminary round opener at the Telus Cup in Membertou, Nova Scotia today (1 p.m.) against the Quebec champion Cantonniers de Magog. The Wheat Kings will also face the host Sydney Rush, the Calgary Buffaloes, Kensington Wild and Markham Waxers. The top four teams advance to the semifinals. 


Brody Beauchemin scored the go-ahead goal shorthanded 11:18 into the second period as the Winkler Flyers downed the defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champion Steinbach Pistons 3-1 Sunday night at the Centennial Arena. Zach Nicolas and Lucas Ens also scored for the Flyers who lead the best-of-seven Turnbull Cup final two games to none. Kirk Mullen had the lone goal for the Pistons. Flyers goaltender Malachi Klassen stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced in game two. Steinbach's Cole Plowman made 26 saves. Game three goes Tuesday night at the Niverville Recreation Centre.


Adam Lowry and Kyle Connor each scored twice as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Colorado Avalanche 7-6 Sunday night in front of a sold-out white-out crowd of 15,225 at Canada Life Centre in game one of the NHL's best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal series. Mark Scheifele, Josh Morrissey and Vladislav Namestnikov also scored for the Jets. Valeri Nichushkin, Cale Makar, Nathan McKinnon, Artturi Lehkonen, Miles Wood and Casey Mittelstadt replied for the Avalanche. Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck made 40 saves in net for the Jets while Alexandar Georgiev stopped 16 shots for Colorado. Game two goes Tuesday night (8:30 p.m.) at Canada Life Centre. 


Kadriana Lott & Colton Lott have a 3-0 round robin record at the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Oestersund, Sweden. The Manitoba and Canadian champions beat Zuzana Paulova & Tomas Paul of Czechia 8-3 and Vanessa Tonoli & Wouter Goesgens of the Netherlands 11-0. Lott & Lott will face Jiyoon Kim & Byeongjin Jeong of South Korea today at 7 a.m.
