Marco Trstenjak of Elmhurst, Addison Kartusch of St. Charles and Rob Oliphant of Rossmere were the medalists in the men's, women's and senior men's divisions at the Manitoba Match Play qualifier Sunday at the Winkler Centennial golf course. Trstenjak was eight-under par 63; Kartusch was one-under par 70 and Oliphant was one-over par 72. Trstenjak’s round featured a streak of six straight birdies on holes 10 through 15. Evan Nachtigall, Keaton Jameson & Brad Purdy of Shilo; Dustin Dyck of Brandon and Thomas Friesen of Wheat City advanced in the men's division. Nachtigall & Dyck were one-over par 72; Pardy was 75; Jameson was 76 and Friesen was 77. Cala Korman of Killarney was four over par 75 and finished tied for fourth in the women's division. Six days of Match Play competition gets underway today at Breezy Bend with the round of 16 in the Senior Men’s division. Competition in the Men’s bracket opens Tuesday followed by the Women on Friday.


The defending South West Baseball League champion Boissevain Centennials played a pair of road games Sunday. Boissevain plated seven runs in the top of the sixth inning and beat the Expos 12-4 in Elkhorn. Zane Sawyer homered for the Centennials. Layton Veitch had a bases loaded walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Rivers Comets past Boissevain 5-4 in the evening game. Mitch Olson had two hits including a home run and drove in four as the Deloraine Royals downed the Virden Oilers 10-5. The Hamiota Red Sox scored seven runs in the first inning en route to an 11-3 victory over the Reston Rockets. Justin Knight had two hits and three RBI for the Red Sox. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes gave up three runs in the top of the fifth innings and lost 8-4 to the Lake Country DockHounds. Ryan Holgate had two hits and scored two runs for the Goldeyes who have Monday off. The Fish will open a three-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks Tuesday at Newman Outdoor Field. 


Host Czechia won gold at the 2024 World Men's Hockey Championship Sunday in Prague. David Pastrnak scored at 9:13 of the third period and David Kampf added an empty-netter with 19 seconds remaining as Czechia blanked Switzerland 2-0. Lukas Dostal made 31 saves in recording the shutout. Sweden scored three unanswered third period goals and downed Canada 4-2 in the bronze medal game. Carl Gundstrom had a pair of goals for the Swede's. Dylan Cozens and Pierre-Luc Dubois replied for Canada. 


Hunter Haight scored his second goal of the game on the power play at 12:16 of the third period to lift the host Saginaw Spirit past the Drummondville Voltigeurs 4-3 at the 2024 Memorial Cup in Michigan. The Spirit improved 2-0 and clinched a berth in the semifinals in the four-team, round-robin tournament. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champions are 0-2. The Moose Jaw Warriors (0-1) face the London Knights (1-0) tonight. The Warriors lost 5-4 to Saginaw in the tournament opener on Friday. The Knights shutout Drummondville 4-0 on Saturday.


The inaugural Professional Women's Hockey League season will end on Wednesday. Alina Müller scored the game-winning-goal at 18:36 of the second overtime to lift Boston to a 1-0 victory over Minnesota at Xcel Energy Arena on Sunday.  With the victory, Boston evens the best-of-five final at 2-2. The decisive fifth game for the Walter Cup will take place on Wednesday at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell.
