The field is set for Golf Manitoba’s Provincial Match Play Championships June 1st to 4th at the Glendale Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg. Evan Nachtigall, Kolby Day & Ross Sheard of Wheat City; Zostrianos Gross of Shilo, Jeri Lafleche of Clear Lake, Clara Peake of Binscarth and Cala Korman of Killarney earned qualifying spots this past weekend at Glendale. Nachtigall was three-under par 69 and finished tied for second in the men’s qualifier; Day was five-over par 77 and tied for 16th; Sheard was six-over par 78 and tied for 18th while Gross was 80 and survived a four-way playoff for the final three spots in the field of 32. 2022 Provincial Men’s and Provincial Junior Men’s champion Braxton Kuntz of Breezy Bend was four-under par 68 and earned medalist honours. Lafleche was three-over par 75 and finished in second place in the women’s qualifier. Peake was 77 and finished third while Korman was 82 and in seventh place. 2022 Manitoba Junior champion Addison Kartusch of St. Charles won medalist honours with an even par 72.  Jay Doyle of Niakwa earned senior men’s medalist honours with an even par 72. The top eight in the women’s division and top 32 in the men’s and senior men’s divisions advance to the Match Play championship. The women’s and senior men’s qualifiers were suspended Saturday and completed Sunday morning. 


David Hodgson singled, doubled and drove in a pair of runs as the Deloraine Royals downed the Hamiota Red Sox 6-1 in the lone South West Baseball League game Sunday night. Blake Artz also had two hits for the Royals and scored two runs. Hayden Crampain had the lone rbi for the Red Sox. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes wrapped up their nine-game homestand with a 3-2 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries. Winnipeg third baseman Dayson Croes went three-for-three at the plate and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. The Fish will open a six-game road trip Tuesday when they meet the Chicago Dogs. 


Sammy Blais scored twice and Winnipeg’s Peyton Krebs had two assists as Canada defeated Germany 5-2 in the gold medal game at the 2023 World Hockey Championship in Tampere, Finland. Lawson Crouse, Tyler Toffoli and Scott Laughton also scored for Canada. Samuel Montembeault made 26 saves. Adam Fantilli, considered one of the top prospects in the upcoming NHL Draft, joined Jonathan Toews as the only Canadian players to win gold at the World Junior Championship and the World Men’s Championship in the same year. It’s the 22nd time Canada has won gold at the IIHF World Championship.
