Jaxon Heeney scored twice and Josh Belcher had three assists as the Rivers Jets downed the Neepawa Farmers 6-2 at the Yellowhead Centre. Joben Smith, Brock Paddock, Riley Boles and Cameron Ramsey also found the back of the net for the Jets who are 3-0 to start the 2023-24 Tiger Hills Hockey League season. Ward Szucki and Shane Byram replied for the Farmers.


Gavin Pomeroy made 36 saves as Hamiota/Rivers/Elton Strathclair defeated Boissevain/Souris/Deloraine/Waskada 3-2. Jack Oakden, Sev Antonio and Jayden Schoonbaert scored for the Huskies. Rayan Sprott and Conner Graham replied for the Broncos. RJ Dell scored the shootout winner as Reston/Elkhorn/Melita/Hartney shaded Crocus Plains 6-5.


The Southwest Cougars dropped a 5-2 decision to the Winnipeg Thrashers Sunday at the Gateway Arena. Tyson Draper and Kelby Diehl did the goal scoring for the Cougars who were outshot 43-34. Crosby Harrison had a pair of goals for the Thrashers.


Team Manitoba lost its opening preliminary round game 6-3 to Ontario Red at the 2023 National Women’s U18 Hockey Championship in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Morgan Smith of Winnipeg scored a pair of power play goals for Team Manitoba. The other went to Sara Manness of La Salle. Manitoba’s next game is Monday (8:30 p.m.) against host B.C.


Daniel Torgersson scored the lone Manitoba goal as the Moose fell 4-1 to Rockford at Canada Life Centre. Brett Seney and Joey Anderson had power play goals for the IceHogs.


Paddler Katie Vincent of Mississauga and breaker Phillip Kim of Vancouver were Canada’s flag-bearers for Sunday’s closing ceremony of the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Vincent won sprint canoe gold with Sloan Mackenzie of Windsor Junction, Nova Scotia. Kim became the first Pan Am Games gold medallist in men’s breaking. Canadian athletes won 164 medals including 46 gold, 55 silver and 63 bronze.
