The defending Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League champion Westman Wildcats played a pair of exhibition games this past weekend at the Sportsplex in Brandon. The Wildcats defeated the Yellowhead Chiefs 8-1 on Satuday and shutdown the Central Plains Capitals 9-0 on Sunday. The Wildcats will face the Northern Capitals, Regina Rebels and the host Calgary Fire this weekend at the Calgary Fire Firestarter tournament. 


The Virden Oil Capitals play their pre-season finale tonight (7:30 p.m.) against the Portage Terriers at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. The Oil Capitals lost 4-2 & 3-1 this past weekend to the defending Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champion Estevan Bruins. 


Cody Eakin has signed a professional tryout agreement with the Calgary Flames. The 31-year-old Winnipeg native played the last two seasons with the Buffalo Sabres. He previously played with the Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights and Winnipeg Jets. Eakin, who was selected by Washington in the third round (85th overall) of the 2009 National Hockey League Draft, has 110 goals and 256 points in 701 NHL games.
