Neelin girls will face College Beliveau in the final and Neelin boys will take on Elmwood in the third place game at the Provincial AAA High School Varsity Basketball Championships in Thompson. Neelin girls defeated John Taylor 60-43 while Neelin boys lost 93-70 to Garden Valley of Winkler in the semifinals. The host Virden Bears will meet Gabrielle Roy of Ile des Chenes in the final at the AA boys championship. The Bears beat Prairie Mountain 77-63 in the semifinals. Virden will face Warren in the consolation final at the AA girls championship in Souris. The Bears beat the host Sabres 50-47 in the semifinals. Glenboro/Baldur will meet Frontier Mosakahiken in the A boys final in Grandview and Glenboro/Baldur will take on Ste. Rose in the A girls final in Gilbert Plains. Glenboro/Baldur boys beat Ross L. Gray of Sprague 59-47 while Glenboro/Baldur girls downed Rivers 70-16 in the semifinals.


The Westman Wildcats and Yellowhead Chiefs are going the distance. Dara Thompson scored in overtime to lift Yellowhead past Westman 4-3 in Shoal Lake. The Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League’s best-of-five semifinal is tied at two. The deciding fifth game goes Sunday in Hartney. Hayley Kolosky, Paige Kozak and Brooklyn Franklin did the goal scoring for the Wildcats.


The Virden Oil Capitals gave up five third period goals and lost their regular season finale 6-4 to the Swan Valley Stampeders. Roux Bazin, Davis Chorney, Nolan Wallace and Dean Gorchynski did the goal scoring for the Caps.


Cole Erickson scored the go-ahead goal with 2:05 left in regulation as the Minnedosa/Erickson Chancellors slipped past the Major Pratt Trojans 5-4 in game one of Westman High School Hockey League’s best-of-three consolation final.


The Brandon Wheat Kings lost 4-3 to the Prince Albert Raiders at Westoba Place. Nate Danielson, Andrei Malyavin and Nolan Ritchie scored for the Wheat Kings. Brandon has three games left and trail Calgary by two points in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Confence. The Hitmen have five games left.


Brandon’s Assiniboine Community College will play their final round robin game against Adrian College today at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II Championship in Boston. The two-time reigning champion Cougars beat Michigan State University 10-0 and the University of Vermont 5-0 in their first two round robin games.


The 2023 World Women’s Curling Championship begins today in Sweden. Canada’s Kerri Einarson, Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard and Briane Harris will play their opener against Anna Hasselborg of Sweden at 1 p.m.
