The Steinbach Pistons are still looking for their first win at the Centennial Cup in Portage. Rory Neill scored twice in the first period as the host Terriers downed the Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions 4-2 Friday night in their preliminary round opener at Stride Place. Ty Paisley and Travis Hensrud did the goal scoring for the Pistons who trailed 3-0 and 3-1 at the period breaks. Steinbach is 0-1-1 and will meet the Kam River Fighting Walleye on Sunday. The Terriers face Kam River tonight.


Connor McClennon, Evan Friesen and Carson Latimer did the goal scoring for the Winnipeg Ice who held on for a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds in game one of the Western Hockey League’s best-of-seven final. The Ice lead 3-0 after 40 minutes. Reid Schaefer got Seattle on the board 28 seconds into the third period. Kevin Korchinski scored with 1:42 left in regulation to cut Winnipeg’s lead to 3-2. Ice netminder Daniel Hauser made 27 saves. Game two goes tonight at Canada Life Centre.


MacKenzie Weegar had a goal and two assists as Canada defeated co-host Latvia 6-0 in their preliminary round opener at the 2023 World Hockey Championship in Riga. Sam Montembeault made 23 saves in recording the shutout. Canada’s next game is Sunday against Slovenia.


Winnipeg Blue Bombers rookie camp is over. Main Camp begins Sunday at IG Field. The Bombers added defensive tackle Caleb Thomas and running back Jordan Salima to the roster and released defensive end Nate Givhan.
