Five Zone 9 high school varsity volleyball teams will play in provincial qualifiers today. The Deloraine Colts are hosting their “A” girls qualifier. The Wawanesa Warriors are at the “A” boys qualifier in Shoal Lake. The Souris Sabres and Virden Bears are at “AA” girls qualifiers. The Sabres are in Winnipeg and the Bears are in Russell. The Boissevain Broncos are at the “AA” boys qualifier in Ile des Chenes.


In the Westman High School Hockey League - Will Galatiuk scored the shootout winner as the Crocus Plainsmen edged Minnedosa/Erickson 4-3; Kash Henkelman had two goals and two assists as Swan Valley beat Glenboro/Carberry/Baldur 6-3; Colby Asselstine had a hat trick as Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn downed Dauphin 8-3; Declan Vanmacklebergh scored twice as Deloraine/Hartney shaded Reston/Elkhorn/Melita/Pierson 4-3 and Riley Davie and Callan Denbow scored two goals each in the Neepawa Tigers 6-3 victory over Major Pratt.


The Virden Oil Capitals gave up four third period goals and lost 7-4 to the Neepawa Titans at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Trevor Hunt scored twice for the Oil Capitals and singles went to David Bielik and Brody Wilson. Parker Korman had two goals and an assist for the Titans.


The Killarney Shamrocks, Miniota/Elkhorn C-Hawks, Souris Elks, Neepawa Farmers, Minnedosa Bombers and Gladstone Lakers were winners on a busy Friday in the Tiger Hills Hockey League. Jordan Robertson had four goals and an assist as the Shamrocks downed the Pilot Mound Pilots 11-2; Brad Bowles and Jason Bowles scored two goals each as C-Hawks beat the Carberry Plainsmen 8-1; Mike Fortin and Ashley Robertson each had a hat trick in the Elks 9-5 victory over the Cartwright Clippers 9-5; Garrett Rempel scored twice and Kyle McDonald chipped in with three assists as the Farmers downed the Wawanesa Jets 8-5. Matt Salerand Shane Jury scored two goals each as the Bombers beat the MacGregor Wild 5-3 and Jesse Toth had two goals and an assist in the Lakers 7-4 victory over the Rivers Jets.


The Brandon Wheat Kings dropped a 5-3 decision to Edmonton. Gavin Hodnett had a hat trick for the Oil Kings including the insurance marker into an empty net with 33 seconds left in the third period. Nolan Ritchie had a pair of goals for the Wheat Kings who are 0-4 on their five-game road trip. Nate Danielson also scored for Brandon.


The Manitoba Moose lost 6-5 to the Texas Stars. Will Butcher scored the tying goal with 10 seconds left in the third period and Jacob Peterson potted the winner 3:49 into overtime for the Stars. Jeff Mallot scored twice for the Moose. Manitoba and Texas combined for six third period goals including four in the final two minutes and 11 seconds.


Murray Warren has a 7-2 record and Mark Franklin is 6-3 heading into the final round robin draw at the Canadian Masters Curling Championship at the Pembina Curling Club in Winnipeg. Judy Colwell finished with a 7-2 record and has qualified for the women’s semifinals.
