The Zone 9 champion Killarney Raiders lost out to Gabrielle Roy of Ile des Chenes in a play-in game at the Provincial Junior Varsity A/AA volleyball championship in Flin Flon. The Neelin Spartans will face College Beliveau in the girls semifinals at the AAA championships in Winnipeg. Virden were eliminated by Leo Remillard in the quarterfinals. Neelin boys lost out to St. John’s Ravenscourt in the quarterfinals.


In the Westman High School Hockey League – Ozy Atkinson had three goals and an assist as Minnedosa/Erickson doubled up on Boissevain/Souris/Deloraine/Waskada 6-3; Cody Zurba scored the go-ahead goal 5:32 into the third period as the Dauphin Clippers shaded the Vincent Massey Vikings 3-2; Brady Burghart potted the shootout winner as Swan Valley edged Neepawa 5-4 and Will Ludlom stopped all 28 shots he faced as Reston/Elkhorn/Melita/Hartney blanked Roblin/Grandview/Gilbert Plains 5-0.


The Virden Oil Capitals scored four third period goals en route to a 5-1 victory over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines. The game was tied at 1-1 after two periods of play and then Naton Miller, Josh Lehto, Ethan Guthrie and Nolan Chastko scored before the 10-minute mark of the third period. Bryce Bryant had the other Virden goal. David Bielik chipped in with three helpers. Eric Reid stopped 21 shots in net for the Caps.


There were five games in the Tiger Hills Hockey League Friday night. Daniel Stagg had three goals and an assist as the Killarney Shamrocks downed the Miniota/Elkhorn C-Hawks 10-5; Taylor Wells had two goals and an assist in the Hartney Blues 6-4 victory over the Deloraine Royals; Jory Geddes and Jacy Kennedy each had two goals and two assists as the Gladstone Lakers downed the Wawanesa Jets 10-2. Braden Nicoll had a hat trick in the MacGregor Wild’s 6-2 win over the Neepawa Farmers and Brock Paddock had three assists as the Rivers Jets beat the Souris Elks 5-2.


The Brandon Wheat Kings lost 2-0 to Red Deer. The Rebels did their scoring in the final minute of regulation. Ollie Josephson scored at 19:40 of the third period and Kai Uchacz added an empty-netter eight second later. Brandon netminder Ethan Eskit made 29 saves.


Connor Hellebuyck made 32 saves as the Winnipeg Jets blanked the Florida Panthers 3-0. Nino Niederreiter, Nikolaj Ehlers and Adam Lowry into an empty net did the goal scoring for the Jets who have won five in a row. The game marked the return of Winnipeg head coach Rick Bowness. Bowness took a leave of absence back on October 23rd to be with his wife Judy who suffered a seizure. The Jets went 9-2-2 under associate coach Scott Arniel.


The Manitoba Moose dropped a 5-1 decision to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Jeff Mallot had the lone goal for the Moose.


Manitoba champions Derrick Anderson and Kara Balshaw were eliminated after losing back-to-back playoff games Friday at the Canadian Curling Club Championships at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club in Winnipeg. Anderson fell 7-3 to Dan Sherrard of Alberta and 5-4 to Shea Steele of Nova Scotia. Balshaw lost 6-2 to Abby Burgess of New Brunswick and 6-4 to Tanya Phillips of Nova Scotia.
