The Killarney Shamrocks, Wawanesa Jets and Rivers Jets were winners on the opening night of the 2023-24 Tiger Hills Hockey League season. Brian Archibald made 20 saves as the Shamrocks downed the Souris Elks 6-1. Avery Cullen had a hat trick as Wawanesa beat Pilot Mound 7-1 and Jaxon Heeney had three goals and two assists as Rivers downed Deloraine 11-1.


In the Westman High School Hockey League – Ethan Hunter, Colby Asselstine and Thomas Swereda scored in the shootout as the Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn Falcons edged the Virden Golden Bears 7-6. Josh Romanik and Carter Dittmer scored two goals each in the Vincent Massey Vikings 8-0 victory over Glenboro/Carberry/Baldur.


The Southwest Cougars defeated the Norman Northstars 5-3 in Souris. Sebastian Stone, Nate Robson, Jack Clark, Bryan Laing and Kylan Anderson did the goal scoring for the Cougars. Drew Shiels chipped in with three assists and Evan Svoboda made 19 saves.


The Virden Oil Capitals win streak has reach four games. Nolan Chastko and Roux Bazin scored two goals each as the Caps bounced the Swan Valley Stampeders 10-1 at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Bryce Bryant, Braeden Lewis, Naton Miller, Brett Sabel and Joey Bielik also scored for Virden.


Team Manitoba defeated Saskatchewan 4-3 and finished the round robin with a 1-2 record at the 2023 WHL Cup in Red Deer. Carter Haney, Brek Liske and Luca Pura of Winnipeg and Carson Carels of Cypress River did the goal scoring for Team Manitoba who will face British Columbia in the semifinals.


The Brandon Wheat Kings lost 2-1 in overtime to the Everett Silvertips. Roger McQueen had the lone goal in regulation for the Wheat Kings who wrap up their seven-game road trip tonight against the Wenatchee Wild.


The Manitoba Moose fell 4-2 to the Iowa Wild at Canada Life Centre. Kyle Capobianco and Brad Lambert scored for the Moose.


Five Manitoba curling teams have qualified for the quarterfinals at the Hearing Life Tour Challenge in Niagara Falls which is the first Grand Slam event of the season. Matt Dunstone will meet Ross Whyte and Reid Carruthers will take on Brad Gushue in the men’s quarterfinals. Kerri Einarson will take on Stefania Constantini, Jennifer Jones will face Silvana Tirinzoni and Kaitlyn Lawes will meet Eun ji Gim in the women’s quarterfinals.


Team Canada will meet Johan Nygren of Sweden in the semifinals at the 2023 World Mixed Curling Championship at Aberdeen, Scotland. Skip Felix Asselin, vice-skip Laurie St-Georges, second Émile Asselin and lead Emily Riley of the Glenmore Curling Club in Montreal defeated Matt Panoussi of Australia 7-3 in the quarterfinals.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have clinched first place in the CFL's West Division. The Bombers, who play their final home game of the regular season schedule tonight against the Edmonton Elks, secured top spot when the B.C. Lions lost their regular season finale 41-16 to the Calgary Stampeders. The Blue Bombers are 12-4. The Lions finished 12-6. The Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders are 6-11 and tied for third place in the West. The Roughriders host East leading Toronto this afternoon and need a win over the Argos to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Blue Bombers won their season series with the Lions and the Stamps took their season series from the Riders.
