The Swan Valley Tigers will face the Dauphin Clippers and the Killarney/Wawanesa Raiders will take on the Neepawa Tigers in the Westman High School Hockey League semifinals. Bailey Hunt scored the go-ahead goal with 17 seconds left in the third period as Swan Valley shaded the Vincent Massey Vikings 5-4. Alex Campbell added a pair of goals for the Tigers who swept the best-of-three quarterfinal in two straight. Porter Ewert scored twice for the Vikings. Jackson Bachewich stopped all 24 shots he faced as the Minnedosa/Erickson Chancellors shutout Reston/Elkhorn/Melita/Pierson 3-0 and took that consolation quarterfinal two games to none.


Roux Bazin had two goals and an assist in the Virden Oil Capitals 4-1 victory over the Blues in Winnipeg. Nolan Chastko, Brett Sabel and Ethan Guthrie also scored for the Caps. Owen LaRocque made 26 saves. Virden and OCN are tied for second place in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s West Division with 65 points each. The Swan Valley Stampeders are in top spot with 68 points.


Hockey Manitoba Provincial Championships that wrap up today include the CO-ED Under-15 Rural C in Melita. The Female Under-18 Rural A Championship is in Elkhorn/McCauley. The CO-ED Under-11 Rural C Championship is in Hartney.


The Winnipeg Ice scored five goals in a 10-minute span of the second period en route to an 8-3 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings at Westoba Place. Conor Geekie had a hat trick for the Ice who went 7-3 on their 10-game road trip. Nate Danielson, Nolan Flamand and Calder Anderson did the goal scoring for the Wheat Kings.


The Winnipeg Jets five-game losing skid came to an end Saturday night at Canada Life Centre. Josh Morrissey had two goals and an assist as Winnipeg defeated Edmonton 7-5. Mark Scheifele, Morgan Barron, Dylan DeMelo, Adam Lowry and Kyle Capobianco also scored for the Jets. Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves. Leon Draisaitl had a hat trick for the Oilers who beat Winnipeg 6-3 Friday night in Edmonton.


Both Manitoba teams played their round robin openers Saturday afternoon at the Brier in London, Ontario. Matt Dunstone defeated Kelly Knapp of Saskatchewan 9-3. Reid Carruthers lost 6-4 to Tanner Horgan of Northern Ontario. Dunstone will face Jake Higgs of Nunavut on Sunday. Carruthers will take on Jamie Koe of Northwest Territories and Nathan Young of Newfoundland & Labrador.
