The Portage Terriers saw their Centennial Cup run come to an end Saturday night at Stride Place. The Battlefords North Stars scored four unanswered first period goals en route to a 7-1 victory over the host Terriers. Steven Kesslering, Holden Doell, Jake Southgate and Bradley Blake potted power play goals for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champions. Matt Wisener had the lone goal for the Terriers. Battlefords will meet the Brooks Bandits Sunday (3 p.m.) in the final. Ethan Barwick stopped all 22 shots he faced as the Alberta Junior Hockey League champions shutout the Central Canada Hockey League champion Ottawa Senators 3-0 in the other semifinal.


Canada fell 3-2 to Switzerland Saturday at the World Hockey Championship in Riga, Latvia. Tyler Toffoli and Michael Carcone did the goal scoring for the Canadians who suffered their first defeat of tournament and are in third place in Group B behind Switzerland and Czechia. The Swiss are 5-0 and Czechia has four regulation wins and an overtime loss. Canada’s next game is Monday against Norway.


Max Murphy homered and Jacob Bockelie had three rbi as the Winnipeg Goldeyes downed the Lake Country DockHounds 7-1 at Shaw Park. Javeyan Williams had three of Winnipeg’s 15 hits.


It’s day eight of Winnipeg Blue Bombers main camp. Today’s practice session at IG Field is from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. The Bombers added wide receiver Brandan Beaulieu and running back Kevon Latulas to the roster and released wide receivers Dominick Fiscelli and Michael Young Jr.
