Six Provincial junior varsity volleyball champions were crowned Saturday. Gilbert Plains defeated Rosenort 25-19, 25-13 in the A/AA girls final in Russell. Virden beat the Major Pratt Trojans 25-23, 25-18 in the third place game. Quincy Smith of the Bears was named the All-Star team. Gabrielle Roy swept Rosenort 25-20, 25-18 in the A/AA boys final in Hamiota. The Neelin Spartans defeated Leo Remillard 17-25, 25-12, 15-6 in the AAA girls final in Altona. Neelin swept College Beliveau 28-26, 25-20 in the AAA boys final in Winkler. College Jeanne-Sauve and Glenlawn captured the AAAA championships in Brandon. The Olympiens swept Lord Selkirk 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 in the girls final. The Lions defeated River East 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18 in the boys final.


The Vincent Massey Vikings will face the Sturgeon Heights Huskies in the semifinals of the Provincial AAAA High School varsity girls volleyball championship Wednesday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on the campus of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. The Vikings defeated the Niverville Panthers 25-20, 25-20, 15-25, 22-25, 15-12 in the quarterfinals Saturday at Sisler Collegiate. Lord Selkirk will meet Winnipeg’s Vincent Massey Trojans in the other semifinal.


In the Westman High School Hockey League – Sawyer Wiebe stopped 24 of the 26 shots he faced as Glenboro/Carberry/Baldur shaded Vincent Massey 3-2. Kash Henkelman had two goals and an assist as Swan Valley downed Killarney/Wawanesa 5-2. That’s the Raiders first loss after starting the season with seven straight wins. William Janz scored the only goal of the shootou as Hamiota/Rivers/Elton/Strathclair edged Minnedosa Erickson 3-2.


Ty Schell scored three times including power play goals two minutes apart in the middle of the third period as the Southwest Cougars downed the Winnipeg Bruins 7-4 at the Southdale Arena. Luke MacKenzie also had a hat trick for Southwest. Dawson Andries with his 11th of the season also scored for the Cougars who reached the midway point of the 2022-23 Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season with a 10-10-0-2 record.


The Westman Wildcats dropped a 4-3 decision to the Winnipeg Ice in Hartney. Sophia Anderson, Kelsey Huibers and Karlyn Gudz scored for the defending Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League champions. Wildcats netminder Grace Glover faced 36 shots.


The Virden Oil Capitals losing skid has reached a season high four games. The Swan Valley Stampeders scored three times in the third period and defeated Virden 6-2 at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Dean Gorchynski and Josh Lehto did the goal scoring for the Oil Capitals.


The Deloraine Royals, Minnedosa Bombers, Rivers Jets and Cartwright Clippers were winners in the Tiger Hills Hockey League. Tanner Clyne had three goals and an assist as the Royals downed the Neepawa Farmers 6-2. Devon Fordyce made 34 saves in the Bombers 5-2 victory over the MacGregor Wild. Joben Smith scored 1:42 into overtime to lift the Jets past the Virden Oil Kings 5-4. Jayden Johnson and Drew Haight scored three goals each as the Clippers beat the Pilot Mound Pilots 9-5.


The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice both lost Saturday night. Brandon dropped a 6-4 decision to the Lethbridge Hurricanes at Westoba Place. Nate Danielson, Calder Anderson, Roger McQueen and Andrei Malyavin scored for the Wheat Kings who trailed 3-0 early in the second period. Winnipeg fell 5-2 to the Blades in Saskatoon. Ty Nash and Aiden Oiring scored for the Ice.


Alex Limoges and Declan Chisholm scored third period power play goals as Manitoba downed the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-1. Oskari Salminen made 24 saves in net for the Moose.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed defensive end Willie Jefferson to a one-year contract extension. The Beaumont, Texas native returns in 2023 for what will be his fourth season with the Blue Bombers and ninth in the CFL. Jefferson, who was named a West Division All-Star, lead the football club in quarterback sacks with seven, adding 33 tackles, one interception for a touchdown, two forced fumbles and 10 pass knockdowns.
