Nate Robson and Nicholas Cullen scored power play goals as the Southwest Cougars won their Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season opener 3-1 over the Thistles in Kenora. Dawson Andries had a shorthanded marker for the Cougars who received a 31-save performance from Evan Svoboda.


The defending Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League champion Westman Wildcats won their season opener 3-1 over the Eastman Selects in Niverville. Marlie Rutherford, Paige Kozak and Hayley Kolosky did the goal scoring for the Wildcats. Westman netminder Payton Murray made 19 saves.


The Virden Oil Capitals dropped a 5-4 decision to the Portage Terriers at Stride Place. Bray Rookes, Nicholas Guberman, Dean Gorchynski and Josh Lehto did the goal scoring for the Oil Capitals who have lost two in a row after starting the season with four straight wins.


The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice were both winners Saturday night. Jake Chiasson had a goal and two assists as Brandon downed Medicine Hat 4-1 at Westoba Place. Evan Groening, Calder Anderson and Charlie Elick also scored for the Wheat Kings who received a 34 save performance from Carson Bjarnason. Conor Geekie had a hat trick as Winnipeg beat the Tigers 5-2 in Medicine Hat. Skyler Bruce and Jaren Brinson also scored for the Ice.


Devon Shore scored the only goal of the shootout as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 Saturday at Canada Life Centre. Cole Perfetti had both Winnipeg goals and both were scored on the power play. The Jets will play their fifth of six exhibition games Wednesday at home against the Calgary Flames.


Teoscar Hernandez and Bo Bichette had four hits each and Danny Jansen drove in five runs as the Toronto Blue Jays bounced the Boston Red Sox 10-0 at Rogers Centre. The Jays, who have four games left, are one-and-a-half games ahead of the Seattle Mariners and three games up on the Tampa Bay Rays in the race for the first wildcard spot in the American League.
