The Virden Oil Capitals are 4-0 to start the 2022-23 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season. Nolan Chastko scored 3:57 into overtime to lift Virden past the Neepawa Titans 4-3 at the Yellowhead Centre. Dean Gorchynski, Colton Miller and Nicholas Guberman also scored for the Oil Capitals. It’s the third time this season Virden has won a game 4-3 in OT.


Josh Medernach scored his second goal of the game with 1:34 left in regulation and Zach Benson potted the winner with seven seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Winnipeg Ice past the Brandon Wheat Kings 4-3 at Westoba Place in the 2022-23 Western Hockey League season opener for both teams. Evan Friesen also scored for the Ice while Brett Hyland, Mason Ward and Nolan Ritchie replied for the Wheat Kings.


The Winnipeg Jets play their first of six exhibition games today against the Oilers in Edmonton. The Jets first home pres-season game is Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators at Canada Life Centre.


Reid Carruthers will face Matt Dunstone in the men’s final and Jennifer Jones will take on Team Casey Scheidegger of Lethbridge skipped by Kristie Moore in the women’s final at the 2022 PointsBet Invitational in Fredericton. Carruthers edged Brad Gushue of St. John’s 5-4 while Dunstone downed Brendan Bottcher of Calgary 9-4 in the men’s Final 4. Jones defeated three-time reigning Canadian champion Kerri Einarson 9-5 and Team Scheidegger outscored Kaitlyn Lawes 8-7.
