It's day one of the Provincial A, AA and AAA High School Varsity Volleyball Championships begin today. Wawanesa is at the A boys championship in Elm Creek. Deloraine is at the A girls championship in Gretna. Souris girls and Boissevain boys are at the AA championships in The Pas. The Neelin Spartans are at the AAA boys championship in Steinbach and the AAA girls championship in Neepawa.


The Sturgeon Heights Huskies will meet the Vincent Massey Trojans in the Provincial AAAA High School varsity girls volleyball final Monday at the University of Manitoba's Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg. The Huskies defeated Brandon's Vincent Massey Vikings 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20 while the Trojans swept the Lord Selkirk Royals 25-16, 25-19, 25-16 in the semifinals. Steinbach Regional will face the Vincent Massey Trojans and Lord Selkirk will take on the St. Paul's Crusaders in the boys semifinals tonight at IGAC.


The Southwest Cougars began the second half of their season with a 3-2 loss to Yellowhead Wednesday night in Souris. Max Collyer scored the only goal of the shootout for the Chiefs. Luke MacKenzie had both Cougars goals in regulation. Southwest netminder Evan Svoboda made 36 saves. 


Canada will play its final match at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar at 9 a.m. against Morocco. Canada lost its previous two Group Stage matches by scores of 1-0 to Belgium and 4-1 to Croatia. John Herdman says he wants to remain coach of Canada's national men's team through the 2026 World Cup in North America after leading the nation to its return to soccer's top tournament.


The Toronto Blue Jays have hired Don Mattingly as bench coach. He spent the last seven seasons as manager of the Miami Marlins and was named National League manager of the year in 2020. He announced in September that he would not seek a new contract with the team. A six-time all-star over a 14-year career with the New York Yankees, Mattingly also spent five seasons as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
