Jace Freeman of Virden has a 2-0 record heading into day three of the 2023 Provincial U18 Curling Championships in Altona. Freeman got five in the fifth end en route to an 10-3 victory over Nathan Poklar of East St. Paul. Freeman will meet Colton Olafson of Portage on the 9 a.m. draw and then face Ronan Peterson of the Heather on the 4 p.m. draw. 


Carson Bjarnason stopped all 19 shots he faced as the Brandon Wheat Kings shutout the Regina Pats 4-0. Brett Hyland, Anthony Wilson, Nate Danielson and Mason Ward scored for the Wheat Kings. Hyland potted his 17th of the season and extended his goal scoring streak to eight games. Matthew Savoie had the lone goal for the Winnipeg Ice in their 3-1 loss in Moose Jaw. Ryder Korczak had all three goals for the Warriors.


Connor Bedard had a seven-point night with three goals and four assists as Canada routed Germany 11-2 at the 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship in Halifax. Dylan Guenther also had a hat trick for the Canadians who scored five power-play goals in the second period. Canada has a 1-1 record and will play its next preliminary round game tonight (5:30 p.m.) against Austria. 


Canada will meet Orebro H-K of Sweden in the quarterfinals at the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland. Canada lost 3-2 to H-C Sparta Prague and 2-1 to host H-C Davos in the preliminary round.


Felix Auger-Aliassime has won the Lionel Conacher Award as The Canadian Press Male Athlete of the Year. The 22-year-old from Montreal won four ATP Tour events and led Canada to its first-ever Davis Cup title. Auger-Aliassime started the year at No. 11 in the world rankings and closed the season at a career-high No. 6.
