All three of the Brandon Wheat Kings first round selections in the 2021 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft have signed their respective WHL Standard Player Agreements with the hockey club. Caleb Hadland, the 22nd overall selection, signed his standard player’s contract on Wednesday. Named the captain of Team Alberta at the 2021 WHL Cup, Hadland has appeared in 18 games this season with the Yale Hockey Academy, scoring 12 times and adding five assists for 17 points. In a pandemic shortened AAA bantam season, the Sylvan Lake, Alberta native scored seven times and added two assists in just four games in 2020-21. Defenseman Charlie Elick, who was the third overall pick of the Wheat Kings, signed his standard player’s contract with the club earlier this week.The Calgary native, who plays at the Edge School prep program, has three goals and nine assists in 11 games this season. Roger McQueen, the fourth overall pick, signed with Brandon last month. McQueen has six goals and 21 assists in 20 games with his hometown Saskatoon Blazers in the Saskatchewan U18 AAA Hockey League.


There will be no more games for the Canadian women's hockey team until the start of the Winter Games. The squad will enter a bubble to ensure its players can board a plane to Beijing in less than a month. The 26 players which include defensemen Ashton Bell of Deloraine and Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne along with goaltender Kristen Campbell of Brandon have yet to reunite as a full team since COVID-19 infiltrated their ranks last month. The roster must be trimmed to 23 ahead of the January 19th deadline for Hockey Canada to nominate its team to the Canadian Olympic Committee.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have agreed to terms with defensive tackle Jake Thomas on a one-year contract extension. Thomas was scheduled to become a free agent next month and will now return for his 10th season with the defending Grey Cup champions. Thomas has recorded 129 defensive tackles, 22 sacks, three forced fumbles and one interception in 151 games played throughout his nine seasons with Winnipeg. In 2021, Thomas recorded four sacks and 15 defensive tackles in 14 regular season games. In the club’s postseason run, Thomas also registered a sack in the both the Western Final and Grey Cup, while posting five tackles (four in the 108th Grey Cup) in those two games. Thomas was drafted by the Bombers 29th overall in the 2012 CFL Draft and is the club’s longest serving Blue Bomber.


CurlManitoba has announced that as a result of the new health order that came into effect, Tuesday, December 21st, 2021 and will extend to at least January 11th, 2022, the Provincial U18 Championships, the Canada Inns Youth Winter Bonspiel and the Manitoba Open and HalfSPIEL have been postponed. Despite the many potential changes brought on by this new health order, CurlManitoba is hopeful that it will be possible to hold the affected events in a timely manner, and will issue updates on the situation as soon as a course of action become clear. The current Health order does not allow bonspiels, Provincial Championships or Regional Playdowns but league play can continue.
