Zostrianos Gross of Shilo has the lead heading into round two of the Provincial Junior Boys Golf Championship. Gross was three-under par 69 Wednesday at the Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg and is three shots ahead of Terence Rafferty of Southwood. Spence Mott of Shilo was two-over par 74 and is in a tie for fourth place. Shilo's Noah Jensen was 88 and Lukas Jensen was 100. Cala Korman of Killarney opened with a five-over par 77 yesterday at Niakwa and trails Addison Kartusch of St. Charles by seven shots at the Provincial Junior Girls Championship. Payton Oakden of Brandon was 78 in round one while Payton Bailey of Wheat City was 94. 


Griffin Albrecht had three hits and Tyler Robertson drove in three runs as the defending South West Baseball League champion Boissevain Centennials defeated the Reston Rockets 7-1. Jay Pringle and Skylar Canada combined on a five-hitter for the first place Centennials (14-1) who play their regular season finale Friday night at home against the Rivers Comets. Billy Patmore drove in the lone run for the fifth place Rockets (6-9) who were eliminated from playoff contention. The Oak River Dodgers kept their post-season hopes alive. The Dodgers (5-8) outscored the Red Sox 7-6 in Hamiota. The Wawanesa Brewers (8-6) hold down the fourth and final playoff spot. 


The Manitoba Junior Baseball League's regular season schedule is over. The Carillon Sultans defeated the Pembina Valley Orioles 8-3. The first place Sultans (19-5) will face the Altona Bisons (3-21) in the quarterfinals. The Bisons lost a pair of games to St. James. The A's beat Altona 10-1 in the completion of a suspended game from June 2nd. St. James plated 11 runs in the fifth inning and took game two 18-1. The Interlake Blue Jays outscored the defending champion St. Boniface Legionaires 8-7 and the Elmwood Giants downed the Winnipeg South Wolves 11-3. The Orioles (11-13) will face the A's (16-8); the Giants (18-6) will take on the Wolves (4-20) and the Blue Jays (16-8) will meet the Legionaires (9-15) in round one of the playoffs. 


Softball Manitoba's Provincial U17 AAA Championship begins today in Friedensfeld. The Westman Magic will meet the Manitoba Angels and Smitty's Terminators on day one. Magic will face the Manitoba Thunder and Central Energy on Friday and wrap up the round robin against the Eastman Wildcats and Winnipeg Lightning on Saturday. The four teams advance to the playoffs on Sunday. 


Ramon Bramasco had two hits and scored a pair of runs and Rob Emery drilled his 8th home run of the season in the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-4 victory over the defending American Association champion Kansas City Monarchs at Blue Cross Park. Goldeyes started Joey Matulovich and reliever Nick Trogrlic-Iverson combined on a four-hitter. 


Canada will face Uruguay in Copa America's third place game Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina. Columbia defeated Uruguay 1-0 in the semifinals and will meet Argentina in the championship game Sunday in Miami Gardens, Florida.


Canada's men's basketball team lost 86-72 to the United States in a pre-Olympic tune-up Wednesday night in Las Vegas. RJ Barrett poured in 12 points while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks each had 10 for the Canadians who led 11-1 midway through the first quarter.
