Round two of the Southwest Baseball League playoffs will begin tonight (7 p.m.) in Boissevain as the Centennials host the Oak River Dodgers in game one of their best-of-five semifinal. The other series starts Friday night in Deloraine as the Royals meet the Hamiota Red Sox. Boissevain and Deloraine earned a bye to the semifinals for finishing one-two during the regular season schedule. The Dodgers swept the Virden Oilers in two straight in the quarterfinals while the Red Sox edged the Wawanesa Brewers 3-2 Tuesday night in Hamiota in the deciding third game of their series.


Ian Sagdal's one-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Eric Rivera from first base with the winning run as the Winnipeg Goldeyes defeated the Chicago Dogs 5-4. Raul Navarro drove a triple to right-centre in the bottom of the fifth that extended his hitting streak to 17 games.


Addison Kartusch & Jeri Lafleche of Winnipeg and Clara Peake of Binscarth have made the cut at the 67th Canadian Junior Girls Championship at The Marshes Golf Club in Ottawa. Kartusch was one-over par 73 Wednesday and is in a tie for 38th place at plus nine through 36 holes. Peake was 79 and is plus 12 while Lafleche was 75 and is plus 13. Cala Korman of Killarney and Crystal Zamzow of Swan River missed the cut which was plus 14. Korman was 78 and plus 18. Zamzow was 93 and plus 37. Krystal (ZhuoTong) Li of Richmond Hill, Erin Lee of Langley and Lindsay McGrath of Oakville, Ontario share the lead at minus four heading into round three. 


The Manitoba Moose signed forwards Colin Bilek and Joseph Nardi to one-year contracts for the 2022-23 American Hockey League season. Bilek tied for the AHA scoring lead with 31 points (11G, 20A) in 34 games for Army (U.S. Military Academy) during the 2021-22 NCAA season. The Brighton, Mich. product totalled 93 points (43G, 50A) in 127 games over the course of four seasons with the team. The two-time captain was named to the NCAA (East) Second All-American Team and AHA First All-Star Team in both 2021 and 2022. Nardi, 25, recorded 14 points (3G, 11A) in 21 games with Northern Michigan University during the 2021-22 NCAA campaign. The Edmonton product tallied 113 points (41G, 72A) in 170 games through his NCAA career. Nardi was also named to the All-WCHA Second All-Star Team and earned WCHA All-Academic team honours in 2020-21. The forward served as Northern Michigan's captain his final two seasons with the program.


The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed veteran running back Shaq Cooper. He spent the 2021 season with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the B.C. Lions, rushing for 142 yards and one touchdown while adding 11 receptions for 69 yards. Cooper opened the 2022 season with the Roughriders but was cut after training camp.
