The Wawanesa Warriors and Souris Sabres will play in the quarterfinals today at the Provincial High School Varsity Basketball Championships. The Warriors will meet Ross L. Gray of Sprague at 8:30 a.m. at the Provincial A boys championship in Glenboro. The Sabres will face Hapnot Collegiate of Flin Flon at 4:15 p.m. at the Provincial AA girls championship in Somerset. 


The Neepawa Tigers will face the Vincent Massey Vikings in the Westman High School Hockey League's championship final. Ian Foster had a goal and two assists as the Tigers downed the Dauphin Clippers 5-2 and swept the best-of-three semifinal in two straight. Tyron Sweetman had both goals for the Clippers. The Major Pratt Trojans scored three goals in each period and defeated Boissevain/Souris/Deloraine/Waskada 9-3 in game one of their consolation final. Tyler Huston and three goals and five helpers for the Trojans. Gavin Wickham, Rayan Sprott and Liam Perkins did the goal scoring for the Broncos.

The Westman Wildcats and Winnipeg Ice will meet in the Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League final for the third year in a row. Danica Averill stopped all 26 shots she faced as Westman shutdown the Eastman Selects 2-0 in Niverville. Ivy Perkin and Marlie Rutherford scored for the Wildcats who took the best-of-five semifinal three games to one. 


First place in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's West Division belongs to the Virden Oil Capitals. Trevor Hunt, Joey Bielik and Roux Bazin scored power play goals in Virden's 4-2 victory over the Flyers in Winkler. Grady Lane also scored for the Caps who received a 28-save performance from Eric Reid. 


The Miniota/Elkhorn C-Hawks will meet the Killarney Shamrocks in the Tiger Hills Hockey League final. Miniota/Elkhorn scored five unanswered goals in the final 30 minutes en route to a 9-4 victory over the Virden Oil Kings Wednesday night in Hamiota. Jason Bowles and Brad Bowles had two goals each for the C-Hawks who swept the best-of-five West Division final in three straight. Tanner Kyle, Zeanen Ziemer, Kyle Lougheed and Taylor Sanheim also scored for the defending champions. Tanner Hepp had a pair of goals for the Oil Kings while the rest went to Devon LeBlanc and Joel Cosens. The Shamrocks eliminated the Gladstone Lakers three games to none in the East Division final. 


The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 4-2 decision to the Nashville Predators at Canada Life Centre. Juuse Saros made 28 saves in net for the Predators who are riding a 13-game point streak. Former Steinbach Pistons forward Cole Smith drew an assist on Kiefer Sherwood's ninth of the season at 14:32 of the first period which extended Nashville's lead to 2-0. Alex Iafallo and Mason Appleton scored for the Jets (41-19-5), who have lost three of their last five games. Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck made 34 saves.


Kristian Reichel had two goals and an assist and Thomas Milic stopped all 29 shots he faced as the Manitoba Moose blanked the Milwaukee Admirals 6-0, 


Kendall Coyne Schofield had a goal and an assist as Minnesota defeated Boston 4-0 on Wednesday at Xcel Energy Center. Nicole Hensley stopped all 20 shots in recording her first PWHL shutout. Minnesota moved into a tie for first place with Montreal and Toronto. 


The Provincial Mixed Curling Championship begins tonight at the Neepawa Curling Club. 10 teams are in the field of the triple knock-out event including former champions Corey Chambers, Sean Grassie and Braden Calvert. The winner will be the CurlManitoba representative at the 2024 National Championship to be played November 3rd - 9th in St. Catherines, Ontario. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced the acquisition and signing of right-handed pitcher Ryder Yakel. Yakel was obtained from the Frontier League’s New York Boulders in exchange for a player to be named later. The 26-year-old appeared in 23 games for the Boulders last season, posting a 1-0 record with a 3.60 earned run average and one save. A native of Garden City, Kansas, Yakel has compiled a 5-1 record with a 4.75 ERA in 63 appearances over three professional campaigns – all in the Frontier League.
