Scott Beever went the distance allowing just five hits and struck out 13 and also drove in a pair of runs as the Rivers Comets defeated the Oak River Dodgers 5-1 in the 2024 South West Baseball League season opener for both teams. Dunc Paddock had two of the five Dodgers hits in the game. The defending champion Boissevain Centennials face the Brewers in Wawanesa tonight. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes edged the Chicago Dogs 2-1. Designated hitter Adam Hall scored both Winnipeg runs. The second run came in when Dogs starter Kenny Serwa was called for a balk with Hall standing at third base. Goldeyes starter Zac Reininger did not allow an earned run in six innings of work and surrendered just three hits. He struck out five and walked one. Ryder Yakel, Tasker Strobel, and Justin Courtney each pitched an inning of scoreless relief, not giving up a hit in the process.


Toronto's Kristen Campbell of Brandon, New York's Corinne Schroeder of Elm Creek and Aerin Frankel of Boston are the Professional Women's Hockey League's Goaltender of the Year finalists. Campbell, 26, led the league in wins (16) and shutouts (three) as she backstopped Toronto to the No. 1 seed in the regular season. In 22 appearances, she had a .927 save percentage with a 1.99 goals-against average while playing 1,293:57 minutes, the second-highest mark in the PWHL. Schroeder, 24, made 15 starts last season while averaging 31 saves per game for New York. She finished the season with a .930 save percentage and a 2.40 GAA. Frankel finished third among all goaltenders in save percentage (.929), GAA (2.00) and wins (eight) while appearing in 18 games, which included 17 starts. Boston is currently tied 1-1 with Minnesota in the first-ever PWHL final. 


Canada will face Slovakia today (9:20 a.m.)  in the quarterfinals of the World Men's Hockey Championship in Prague. Canada finished the preliminary round first in Group A with 19 points. Slovakia was fourth in Group B with 12 points.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers added American receiver Sy Barnett, American defensive back Russell Dandy and American offensive lineman Kendall Randolph to their training camp roster. The football club released American receiver Oliver Martin; transferred National defensive lineman Cam Lawson to the six-game injured list and moved American kicker Sergio Castillo to the suspended list. The Blue Bombers play their final pre-season game Friday, May 31st at home against the Calgary Stampeders.
