Mitch Olson of the Deloraine Royals is the Southwest Baseball League's Most Valuable Player. Olson led the SWBL with six home runs and batted .372 on a Royals team that finished second in the standings and advanced to the AA provincials for the first time in 20 years. Deloraine's Kyle Breemersch, who struck out 34 batters in 34 1/3 innings and compiled a 4-2 record was named the Rookie of the Year. John Hutton of the Rivers Comets is the recipient of the Mark Minor Award which is awarded annually to the most inspirational player on their team as voted on by the other teams in the league. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes gave up five runs in the top of the sixth inning and lost 8-5 to the Kansas City Monarchs. Max Murphy drilled his 31st home run which ties Kyle Martin (2021) for the teams single-season record. The Fish, who have lost five in a row since clinching a playoff spot, will wrap up the regular season schedule with a four-game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries beginning Friday at Shaw Park. 


Canada will face Sweden in the quarterfinals today (1 p.m.) at the 2022 World Women's Hockey Championship in Herning, Denmark. Team Canada is coming off a 5-2 loss to the United States in their final preliminary round game on Tuesday. The other quarterfinals feature the USA against Hungary, Finland meets Czechia and Switzerland will take on Japan. 


The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's newest franchise played its first ever exhibition game on Wednesday night. The Niverville Nighthawks dropped a 3-2 decision to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Weyburn Red Wings in Souris.


The Brandon Wheat Kings rookie camp starts today with practice sessions at 9 a.m. & 11 a.m. Rookie game #1 is at 5 p.m. There are two rookie games on Friday. Main camp begins Saturday with the annual Black & Gold Futures game scheduled for Monday at 2 p.m. The Wheat Kings play their first of four exhibition games Friday, September 9th against the Winnipeg Ice at Westoba Place. Brandon will open the 2022-23 Western Hockey League season at home on September 24th against the Ice. 


The 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets season officially kicks off with the return of Winnipeg Jets Fan Fest on Saturday, September 24th at Bell MTS Iceplex. For the first time since 2019, Fan Fest offers a sneak peek of Winnipeg Jets and Manitoba Moose top players as they prepare for the 2022-23 season. Fans can get up close and experience on-ice training camp sessions from the rinkside and watch interviews with their favourite players on the event mainstage. There will be fun and games for all ages inside and outside the venue, including the introduction of NHL Street, the premier youth ball hockey experience in North America. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with free parking in the adjacent Assiniboia Downs lot.


Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose Bay and Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke are tied for the lead heading into the final round of the Canadian Senior Women's Golf Championship at Breezy Bend. Both are plus three after 36 holes. Manitoba champion Rhonda Orr of Southwood was eight-over par 80 Wednesday and is in a tie for 14th place at plus 15. Nonie Marler of Vancouver is plus two and is one stroke ahead of Stouffer and Samuel heading into the final round of the Canadian Women's Mid-Amateur Championship. Charmaine Mackid of Breezy Bend was four-over par 76 in round two and is in 16th place at plus 12.
