Colby Asselstine scored his second goal of the game in overtime to lift Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn past Neepawa 4-3 at the Yellowhead Centre in the lone Westman High School Hockey League game Monday night. Noah Street and Ethan Hunter also scored for the Falcons. Jory Kulbacki had a pair of goals for the Tigers. His second of the night with 42 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 3-3. Brody Pollock had the other Tigers goal. 


The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Steinbach Pistons and Portage Terriers remain in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings as the new year begins. The Pistons dropped from number six to 10. The Terriers fell from 10 to 14. The Winkler Flyers dropped out of the top 20. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Battlefords North Stars, who have yet to lose in regulation this season, are the number one nationally ranked team for the tenth week in a row. 


The Brandon Wheat Kings dealt defenceman Mason Ward to the Swift Current Broncos in exchange for blueliner Kayden Sadhra-Kang. Ward was acquired by Brandon in May of 2021 as part of a deal that involved goaltender Conor Ungar going to the Red Deer Rebels.  The 20-year-old Lloydminster native had 10 goals and 14 assists in 66 games with the Wheat Kings. Sadhra-Kang was originally chosen by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the 9th round of the 2018 WHL Prospects Draft and later dealt to Swift Current in October of 2021. The 19-year-old Richmond, BC native has one goal and nine assists this season.


Team Canada has a 2-0 record at the 2023 World Women's U18 Hockey Championship in Ostersund, Sweden. Caitlin Kraemer scored the go-ahead goal on the power play 4:48 into the third period and then added an empty netter with 15 seconds left in regulation as Canada defeated the host Swedes 4-2. Hannah Clark made 43 saves in net for the Canadians who will play their final preliminary round game against the United States on Wednesday. St. Adolphe's Avery Pickering is on the Team Canada roster. 


The Winnipeg Jets have assigned the hockey teams 2021 and 2022 first round draft picks to their respective Western Hockey League teams. Chaz Lucius will spend the remainder of the season with the Portland Winterhawks and Brad Lambert is joining the Seattle Thunderbirds. Lucius, who recorded a hat trick including the overtime winner for the United States in their victory over Sweden in the bronze medal game at the 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship in Halifax, had two goals and three assists in 12 games with the AHL's Manitoba Moose. Lambert, who had one goal in five games for Finland at the World Juniors, had two goals and one assist in 14 games with the Moose. 


Dennis Thiessen of Winnipeg and Collinda Joseph of Stittsville, Ontario will represent Canada at the 2023 World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles Curling Championship from March 4th-12th in Richmond, British Columbia. The World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles Curling Championship is an open-entry event for the Members Associations of the World Curling Federation. Teams consist of one female and one male wheelchair athlete. This will be the second-ever World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles Curling Championship and the first hosted by Canada. The inaugural World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles Curling Championship was held this past spring in Lohja, Finland, with Canada finishing tied for seventh.
