The Canadian women’s softball team faces Peru today at the 2023 Pan Am Games in Santiago, Chile. Boissevain’s Zoe Hicks drove in three runs as Canada won its opener 4-0 over Cuba on Sunday. Canadian athletes have won 105 medals including 35 gold, 32 silver and 38 bronze.
Virden Oil Capitals forward Nolan Chastko is a Manitoba Junior Hockey League Star of the Week. The 18-year-old Brandon native had five goals and three assists in four games. Chastko scored a shorthanded goal and a power play marker to tie the game before potting the shootout winner as the Caps beat the OCN Blizzard 3-2 this past Saturday to wrap up their weekend road trip.
Three Manitoba Junior Hockey League teams are inside the top 10 of the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Top 20 rankings. The Winkler Flyers (10-1-0-1), who dropped back-to-back games after starting the season with nine straight wins, fell from number one in the country to number five. The Steinbach Pistons (11-2-1) moved from 10 to eight while the Dauphin Kings (10-2) jumped from 12th place to number 10. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Flin Flon Bombers are the new number one team.
The Winnipeg Jets lost 3-2 to the New York Rangers Monday night at Canada Life Centre. Mika Zibanejad potted the winner with 26 seconds remaining in overtime for New York. Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider also scored for the Rangers. Nikolaj Ehlers and David Gustafsson replied for the Jets who have points in five straight games.
Kerri Einarson and Brad Gushue both have 2-1 records at the Pan Continental Curling Championships in Kelowna. Einarson defeated Jennifer Westhagen of Australia 9-5. Gushue recorded a pair of wins Monday. The reigning Brier champion downed Anton Hood of New Zealand 8-2 and then beat Andrew Stopera of the United States 7-5 in an extra end. The top five teams in the men’s and women’s competitions will earn berths into their respective world championships.
