The Brandon Wheat Kings dropped a 3-1 decision to Red Deer. Liam Keeler and Arshdeep Bains scored power play goals for the Rebels who lead the Western Hockey League's best-of-seven opening round series two games to one. Logen Hammett had the lone goal for the Wheat Kings. Game four goes tonight at Westoba Place. The Winnipeg Ice are one win away from advancing to round two. Mikey Milne scored three times and Connor McClennon had a goal and three assists as Winnipeg bounced the Prince Albert Raiders 10-1. Zachary Benson added a pair of goals for the Ice who lead that series three games to none. Conor Geekie, Jakin Smallwood, Owen Pederson and Skyler Bruce also scored for Winnipeg. Game four is set for tonight in Prince Albert. 


Team Canada will face Finland in the quarterfinals Thursday morning at the 2022 World U18 Hockey Championship in Kaufbeuren, Germany. Canada finished the preliminary round in third place in Group A with four points. Canada lost 6-5 to the Czech Republic on Tuesday. Tomas Hamara scored the tying goal with 2:34 left in the third period and then potted the winner 1:50 into overtime. Adam Fantilli, Lukas Dragicevic, Nicholas Moldenhauer, Grayden Siepmann and Kocha Delic did the goal scoring for the Canadians who gave up five power play goals. St. Adolphe's Owen Pickering and Josh Filmon of Winnipeg both picked up assists. Team Canada netminder Reid Dyck of Winkler stopped 46 of the 52 shots he faced.


The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's best-of-seven final for the Turnbull Trophy begins this weekend. The Steinbach Pistons will meet the Dauphin Kings Friday and Saturday at the T.G. Smith Centre. The series then shifts to Credit Union Place for games three and four next week Tuesday and Wednesday. The Pistons eliminated the Virden Oil Capitals four games to two in the semifinals while the Kings needed five games to knock off the Winkler Flyers. 


Kyle Connor is the Winnipeg Jets nominee for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy which is given "to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability." The 25-year-old Clinton Township, Michigan native is currently tied for fifth in the National Hockey League in goals scored (45), T-2nd in even strength goals scored (34), T-4th in shots on goal (308), and T-7th in shorthanded goals (3). Connor's four penalty minutes this season are the fewest among NHL players that have at least 80 points and they are also the fewest among players who have appeared in at least 76 games.


The Manitoba Moose gave up three power play goals and lost 4-2 to the Texas Stars at Canada Life Centre. Daniel Torgersson and Thomas Caron did the goal scoring for the Moose. Portage la Prairie's Dean Stewart drew an assist on Caron's third of the season 4:28 into the second period which gave Manitoba a 2-1 lead. The Moose will wrap up the regular season schedule with a pair of home games against the Abbotsford Canucks this weekend.


Jocelyn Peterman & Brett Gallant have a 5-1 record at the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Geneva. Sherry Anderson is 3-1 and Wade White is 4-0 at the World Senior Curling Championships which are also in Switzerland. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed offensive lineman Leon Johnson and defensive tackle Kenneth Randall. Johnson joins the Blue Bombers after a four-year college career with the Temple Owls. The New Brunswick, New Jersey native made 10 starts at left tackle during his senior season including the season-opener against Notre Dame in which he served as one of the team captains. Johnson started 14 games at right tackle during his junior year. Johnson signed with the National Football League’s Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and attended the team’s training camp. Randall comes to the Blue Bombers after a solid college career with the University of Charleston Golden Eagles. The defensive tackle was named First Team All-MEC Honors in 2019 and finished his collegiate career with 64 tackles, 7 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. The Atlantic City, New Jersey native signed with the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 as an undrafted free agent and attended the team’s training camp.
