In June 1919, the Canadian government banned Mennonites, Hutterites and Doukhobors from immigrating to Canada. The ban was in response to Mennonites not serving as soldiers in World War One. The ban was lifted when Mackenzie King followed through on his pre-election promise after winning the 1921 election, however, while the political roadblock had been removed, bureaucratic hurdles would present serious problems and grief for the Canadian Mennonite Board of Colonization.
