Turtle Mountain Bible Camp is hosting a ‘Skijoring’ fundraiser next month to raise money for their equine program.

Camp Equestrian Manager, Stephanie Zylstra, says everyone who comes out on the Saturday will have their chance to try this fun form of winter outdoor recreation.

‘Skijoring’ is when a horse and rider pull someone who is wearing skis, or riding a snowboard or a sled.

“So, everyone will need to bring their own skis, snowboard or sled,” adds Zylstra.

The February fundraiser will also include skating, a sled hill, a bonfire and snacks.  Entry is by donation only.

Currently, Turtle Mountain Bible Camp owns 14 horses that they use year-round to facilitate their equestrian program.

“During the summer season, we run the ‘Skills’ program where kids can try horse back riding and some ground skills about horses.  During the rest of the year we run a regular riding lesson program.”

Zlystra says the summer equine program is very popular during the camp season.  “We always have a really good turnout for campers to the Skills program, and we’ve been having a really great turnout for the lessons as well.”

Funds raised during the ‘Skijoring’ Saturday will go towards feed and maintenance of the horses.  As well, purchasing a team of horses and a sleigh and wagon are on the wish list for TMBC, to expand their program and camp recreation.

The Saturday, February 19th event will be held from 1-4 pm at TMBC.
