The 2012 Telus Cup Regional Championship in Virden surpassed organizers expectations. The host Southwest Cougars made it all the way to Sunday's final and that was one reason ticket sales were brisk. Four teams from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario were vying for the right to move onto the nationals April 23rd to 29th in Leduc Alberta.

The host committee was chaired by John Johnston of Oak Lake.

The regionals attraced a variety of hockey people including parents, fans and scouts. In the crowd was Andy Murray. He grew up in Souris and moved on to coach world chamionship teams and in the NHL.

Right now Murray is at Western Michigan University. He's happy anytime he can return to Southwestern Manitoba, especially if hockey is involved.
