Russell Moffat first volunteers to work at the fair in Killarney when he was just 15 and now 47 years later he’s still helping coordinate the fair and do volunteer duties.

Moffat just can’t step aside because he loves the fair and what it means to the community.

“It was sure nice to have the fair back this year because after a couple of years with nothing on people are looking to get out and have something to attend.”

Moffat says the small town fair is changing a lot of things will look different over the next few years.

“Livestock has dropped off significantly and it’s down at most fairs. The fair will have to change and we’ve been talking about the future and how to plan and what we should offer because livestock numbers are disappearing like crazy.”

Moffat adds the problem is nobody really knows what a revamped fair should look like.

“We want to reflect what is in the community and we want it to show case agriculture but what do you get and we’re still tossing that around. If you call it an agricultural fair and we move towards entertainment or something like that we should have some ag aspect to it” said Russell Moffat.

The Killarney Agricultural Society has had an infusion of more younger members. “That’s a good thing because they bring in new ideas which is really great.”

“What the fair should look like is the big question. We have the resources thanks to our campground which brings in a lot of money. The question is what do you put on the make the fair a go in the future.”
