Feed barley prices in western Canada have started to rise.

"As the feed wheat supplies become smaller, barley supplies were quite low to begin with, so we're now starting to see the domestic feed demand pick up and that has caused barley prices here in western Canada to move higher," says Bruce Burnett, Director of Weather and Market Analysis with the Canadian Wheat Board.

Offshore demand for feed barley has been slow over the last few weeks as the world's largest buyer, Saudi Arabia, is holding off on purchasing.

"International values have increased slightly. We're anticipating some demand from Saudi Arabia to come in the next few months which will certainly tighten up barley supplies," he says. "Counter to that is the fact that the political uncertainty (in North Africa) has dropped corn values so there are some negative pressures there, but the Saudi demand should help support values for feed barley in the coming months."
