For the second time in three days, a former member of the 2010-11 Wheat Kings has signed on with an  American Hockey League club.

The latest is 20-year old local product Shayne Wiebe, who is off to the Connecticut Whale for the balance of the regular season and playoffs, after inking an AHL Amateur Tryout (ATO) agreement on Thursday.

The 54th captain in the history of the Wheat Kings, Wiebe's 4-year Western Hockey League career came to an end earlier this week when Brandon lost out to the Medicine Hat Tigers in their best of seven Eastern Conference Quarter Final series.

Wiebe enjoyed a career year this past season, scoring a personal best 44 goals and 65 points in 72 games. Chosen the club's Hardest Working Player, the former Kamloops Blazer was also recognized as the club's Top Graduating Player and winner of the Art Marshall Memorial Trophy.

In six playoff games against the Tigers, 6' 190 lb. left winger scored four goals and 8 points.

During Wiebe's 4-year WHL career, he scored 108 goals and 197 points in 276 games while accumulating 287 minutes in penalties. The Wheat Kings acquired him from the Blazers in December 2009 and he was instrumental in Brandon making it all of the way to the 2010 Memorial Cup Championship Final against the Windsor Spitfires.

With the Whale, Wiebe is joining a club that is currently sitting in third place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 39-30-2-6. The team is coached by former Winnipeg Jets' prospect Ken Gernander and longtime NHLer J.J. Daigneault.

Connecticut has three games remaining in the regular season, with the playoffs scheduled to begin next weekend.

On Wednesday, Wheat Kings' center scott Glennie joined the AHL's Texas Stars and made his American League debut in a game against the Peoria Rivermen that night.
