Youth for Christ Westman is hosting their first art exhibition fundraiser in mid-May to raise money for their 'Create Art Program'.

Program facilitator and event organizer, Dawn Redlin, says the art show and sale will feature up to 100 pieces using a variety of mediums, all in the colors (or lack of) in white, black and greys.

'In Black and White' will be held at the Firehall Event Venue in downtown Brandon over two days; May 25th and 26th.  "It's basically a come-and-go and you're welcome to come and browse or purchase artwork!"

Contributors to the exhibition feature artists from novice to professional; local 'back room' artists, Brandon University Fine Arts program students, Winnipeg artists, high school students, as well as those who have completed their work through the YFC Create Art Program.

"We run the Create Art Program here at YFC for at-risk youth, ages 17 to 29," explains Redlin. "There's been a lot of study ... about the benefits of art to mental health.  We provide a safe, calm place where youth can just come and explore and be creative."

"We don't charge for the program so these funds are going to provide supplies for the program, and we also provide a meal to the youth who attend.  So, it will help support the meals that we provide as well."

YFC Westman is hoping to expand this program to facilitate individual and small group therapeutic art life-coaching to encourage mental health in young people.

Art pieces can be sold with YFC receiving 30% commission, or pieces can be donated completely and receive a tax-deductible receipt for 70% of the art piece.
