The Cougars had a busy weekend with both volleyball teams and the women’s hockey team, opening their seasons. Women's volleyball hosted Dakota College Bottineau Friday night and again Saturday morning, while Men’s Volleyball was at the Red River College tournament in Winnipeg, and Women's Hockey was on the road in Fargo playing North Dakota State University Saturday and Sunday.

Friday evening the Assiniboine Community College Gymnasium saw some exciting volleyball action, with the Cougar women winning the match in three sets. The Cougars won the first set 25-22, the second set 25-21, and battled back to win the third set 28-26.

Saturday morning the women's team played the Dakota College Bottineau Ladyjacks again, with the Cougars a little slower out of the gate, losing the first set 15-25. They rebounded to win the second set 25-17 and went on to win the fourth and fifth sets, 25-20 and 25-22 to win the match in four sets. The Cougar’s showed depth to their lineup with all players making it on the court both matches.

The men’s volleyball team played two matches Friday night in the Red River College tournament. They squared off against University of St. Boniface first to open their season. The Cougars fell to the Les Rouges 18-25 and 15-25. The Cougars second match was against the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers. The Cougars struggled to find momentum and lost 12-25 and 17-25 to the Blazers.

Saturday morning saw the Cougars playing the Red River College Rebels in round robin. The Rebels won both sets, 25-15 and 25-22. The Cougars finished up their round robin play with a match against the Providence University College Pilots, and found some traction winning the first set 27-25. The Pilots bounced back to win the second set 25-12, to take the game to a third set. The Pilots won the third set 15-11.

The women's hockey team travelled to Fargo, North Dakota for games Saturday and Sunday against the North Dakota State University Bison. Saturday night saw the Cougars open their season with a big win against the Bison. They won 4-1, with Karli Frederick, Blair Bodie, Sierra Parenteau, and Alyssa Alderson scoring for the Cougars.

Sunday morning the Cougars squared off against the Bison again. The game went into overtime with the Bison pulling out a 3-2 win over the Cougars. Alyssa Alderson and Karli Frederick scored for the Cougars again, and the player of the game was Karli Frederick.

Next weekend we will see the Cougar Soccer teams back in action with play against the Brandon University Bobcats Saturday, October 14. The women play at 1 p.m. and the men at 3:15 p.m. at Brandon University. Sunday the teams will head to Winnipeg to play the Red River Rebels at the Norm Konowalchuk Field. Both teams play at 12 noon.

The women's volleyball team is also on the road next weekend for some more pre-season action, as they head to Devil’s Lake, North Dakota to play in the Sportscentre - Sleep Inn Slamfest volleyball tournament Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15.
