Peter Nicholls, Randy Neufeld, Dean Moxham & Dale Michie - 2015 Canadian Senior Men's Curling Champions

Randy Neufeld, Dean Moxham, Peter Nicholls and Dale Michie have won our province's fourth Canadian championship this curling season joining junior champion Brayden Calvert, Scotties Tournament of Hearts champ Jennifer Jones and Canada Winter Games gold medalist Colin Kurz on top of the mountain.

Neufeld, Moxham, Nicholls and Michie won the Canadian Senior Men's Championship Saturday in Edmonton.

“It's awesome,” said Neufeld. “Didn't expect to even win Manitoba and now all of sudden you win Canada - it's crazy.”

The La Salle Curling Club foursome beat 2013 Canadian champion & 2014 World champion Wayne Tallon of New Brunswick 6-4 in the semifinals and then defeated Ted Butler of Quebec 5-3 in the final.

“The semifinal wasn't bad actually,” said Michie who along with Moxham curled with Don Spriggs for years and together represented the Portage Curling Club at a number of Provincial Men's Curling Championships. “You're not really that nervous because you're just striving to get to the final. And then when you get to the final – may be the first end you're a little nervous – after that you're just out curling. Then it starts getting nerve-wracking at the very end again.”

Neufeld & company recorded a 5-1 record and easily advanced to the championship round where they finished tied for second with Tallon at 5-2.

Moxham said the team started to build some momentum around mid-week.

“We had a bit of a slow start. It took a little while to get used to the rocks and the ice and everything like that. Probably about Tuesday of the week we picked everything up and we played real solid the rest of the way – kind of like the provincials.”

Nicholls and Michie were the only member of the team who had previously played in a Canadian championship.

Nicholls went to the 1994 Brier with Dave Smith while Michie played second for Brian Pallister at the 2001 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship.

“It's kind of surreal at this point,” said Nicholls. “You never think at this age that you have a chance to be a Canadian champ and things just went really well. Everyone played fantastic and Randy was just great. It's exciting.”

Neufeld, Moxham, Nicholls and Michie will represent Canada at the 2016 World Seniors Curling Championship at a time and location yet to be determined.
