This past weekend the Cougars Women's hockey team travelled to Tempe, Arizona for a best of three series against the Arizona State University Sun Devils.  The Sun Devils play in the American Collegiate Hockey Conference Division I.

Friday, January 12 the puck dropped at 10 p.m. at the Oceanside Ice Arena.  The Sun Devils took a 1-0 lead during the second period.  Just over a minute later, Rachel Charles of the Cougars answered this goal for a 1-1 tie.  Charles continued with her ability to find the back of the net in the third period, scoring two more for the Cougars.  The Cougars sealed the deal with a fourth goal as the third period ended, for a 4-1 win to open the second half of their season.  

Game two took place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 13.  The Cougars opened the first period with two goals, with Charles scoring the first goal less than five minutes into the game.  The Sun Devils rebounded in the second period to make the game 2-1, but this goal was quickly followed by another goal from Karli Frederick of the Cougars, making the game 3-1 at the end of the second.  The Sun Devils scored again in the third, but Charles found the net again for her 5th goal in two games and to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead.  The Cougars ultimately won the second game 4-2.

Game three was played at 9 a.m. on January 14.  The Cougars opened the scoring with one goal in the first period, followed by two goals in the second, and one in the third to round out their 4-0 victory and sweep of the Sun Devils. Blair Bodie scored twice for the Cougars Sunday morning.

Next weekend sees the Cougars volleyball teams back in action at home, taking on the Providence University College Pilots, and the futsal teams opening their season in Winnipeg.  

Cougar volleyball action begins against the Pilots on Friday, January 19 with the Men playing at 6 p.m. and the Women at 7:30 p.m.  Saturday, January 20 the men play at 12 noon and the women at 1:30 p.m.

The futsal teams play Saturday, January 20,  first taking on the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges. The  men play at 11 a.m. and the women at 12:30 p.m.  The Cougars then head across the city to take on the Red River College Rebels with the men playing at 3 p.m. and the women at 4:30 p.m.

The hockey teams’ next action will be when they travel to Thunder Bay, ON for three games on February 2 and 3.  They will play the defending champions Lakehead University Friday, February 2 at 6 p.m.  On Saturday, February 3 they will play Bishop’s University at 10 a.m. and Iowa State University at 4 p.m.
