Penalties and a power play miscue cost the Winnipeg Jets Tuesday night at MTS Centre.

Melker Karlsson scored on a penalty shot 9:37 into the third period and Patrick Marleau netted the winner with 4:33 remaining as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Jets 4-3.

Karlsson, who was in on a shorthanded breakaway after Jacob Trouba mishandled the puck at the San Jose blueline, was awarded the penalty shot when the Winnipeg defenseman slashed his stick before he got his shot away on Ondrej Pavelec.

Brent Burns opened the scoring for the Sharks as he potted his 21st of the season on a 5-on-3 power play just 3:59 into the game.

Bryan Little had a pair of goals for the Jets who dropped a 3-2 decision to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday.

"Last night was really really physical, normally these two teams play a real fast game," said Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice. "I don't know if there was a whole lot of speed in this one. There wasn't a lot of ease for either team coming off back-to-back."

Andrew Copp also scored for the Jets.

Patrik Laine had an assist in his return to the lineup after missing eight games with a concussion.

Winnipeg (22-25-4) will face the Blackhawks in Chicago on Thursday before the start of the NHL's All-Star break.
