The Brandon Wheat Kings are moving onto round three of the Western Hockey League playoffs.

Friday night in Brandon, the Wheaties, for the second straight game, used overtime to get by the Regina Pats.

Like Wednesday in Regina, game five ended 3-2 in Brandon's favour as the Wheat Kings took the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal four games to one.

The Wheat Kings led 1-0 after the first period.

Regina scored two unanswered goals in the second period.

16-year-old Nolan Patrick scored his second goal of the game for Brandon to tie the score at 2-2 midway through the third period.

Captain Peter Quennville scored 6:15 into the extra period.

“It was just a play where I was coming onto the ice off of a change and I saw Johnny pick up the loose puck and he saw me out of the corner of his eye and his pass just made it to me and I was able to get the puck in” said Quennville.

Brandon outshot Regina 51-27.

Wheat Kings Coach Kelly McCrimmon said his team had a strong third period and felt good heading into overtime.

“You just never know in overtime, we ended up having to kill a penalty and then fortunately we had two guys make a play and win us the series with the Quennville goal.”

McCrimmon says the team feels good heading into the conference final because of all the close games, being competitive and pulling out the wins when needed.

Brandon will play the Calgary Hitmen in the Eastern Conference final.
