It's onto the Western Hockey League Championship series for the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Brandon will play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup after the Club won its seventh WHL Eastern Conference Championship on Friday night.

Brandon defeated the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL Eastern Conference Championship Series in five games after scoring an 8-2 victory Friday.

Wheat King's Coach Kelly McCrimmon was pleased with his team's effort especially considering the fast start by the Hitmen. “The start to the game was really fast and I thought both teams were prepared and played hard. There's no question Calgary really out played us in the first period.”

Brandon got back on track scoring at the 8:35 mark of the second. That goal came off the stick of veteran blue liner Eric Roy. “We spoke in the dressing room after the first and realized we needed to step up our game and do something to get the crowd back into the game” said Roy.

Jayce Hawryluk was named the first star of with a four point effort including 2 goals and 2 assists. The turning point was in the second period when the Wheat Kings rallied from a one-goal deficit with three goals in the span of 76 seconds including the eventual game-winner by rookie Nolan Patrick at the 9:51 mark.

Brandon picked up Morgan Klimchuk from Regina before the trade deadline and he likes the way the team is playing. “When I first came here and looked around I knew this team was something special. There are a lot of skilled players, lots of scoring and great goal tending."

Brandon went 2 for 3 on the powerplay and Calgary was 1 for 3.

Brandon last won the WHL Eastern Conference Championship in 2005 and it was 1996 when the Wheat Kings last won the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL Champions.

The Wheat Kings will now face the winner of the Western Conference Championship Series between the Kelowna Rockets and Portland Winterhawks. Brandon, also regular season champions, will have home ice advantage in the 2015 WHL Championship Series.

Games one and two will be played May 8th and 9th. The series then swings back to the western conference for the next 3 games.
