The Boissevain Broncos will represent Zone 9 at both the Provincial High School Baseball Championship in Winkler and the Provincial High School Fastpitch Championship in Morden this weekend.

The Broncos won the MHSAA baseball championship banner a year ago in Cartwright defeating the John Taylor Pipers 4-1 in the final and captain Jay Pringle says they wanted to earn another trip to the Provincials.

“Right at the start of the year we set our goal to win the Zone 9 banner which we did. That was the first of our two goals to get where we wanted to be this year.”

“Last year when we set the goal to win provincials it was hard because none of us had ever won at provincials,” Pringle said. “We had been close throughout minor ball but now that we know the feeling – this year for the nine returning guys on our team - we felt like it was what we wanted to do even worse than win it the first time.”

The Broncos are the top seed in Winkler and will play in Pool “A” along with the Hamiota Huskies and William Morton Collegiate of Gladstone on Thursday.

“When you win back-to-back it just proves that you've got what it takes so we're hoping that we can do it and have a good weekend like we did last year,” said Pringle.

The Portage Collegiate Trojans are the second seed followed by the host Garden Valley Zodiacs and the Sturgeon Heights Huskies.

The Provincial High School Fastpitch Championship begins Friday and Boissevain coach Rylee Woods is really looking forward to their trip to Morden.

“We're absolutely ecstatic,” said Woods. “We're very excited to go and we're hoping for some good weather and some good ball.”

“They are super dedicated,” replied Woods when asked what she likes about her ball team. “They all work together as a team. We have really good offence this year and solid defense and some solid younger players. The grade nine, 10's and 11's are really holding us together this year so it's really exciting.”

The Broncos are seeded number three and will face the host Morden Thunder and the Dauphin Clippers in the round robin.

“We have to come out Friday just rarin' to go,” said Woods. “Definitely get on the bats early on the teams that we're playing, get up and then just hold them with our defense.”

The defending champion Portage Collegiate Saints are seeded number one followed by Steinbach Regional, Boissevain and Stonewall.
