A Manitoba test of the new national Alert Ready system Wednesday revealed some flaws. The system is intended to be another way of alerting people to such things as weather emergencies and other disasters by using cell phones. Ron Schuler, the Minister responsible for Manitoba Emergency Measures, says a significant number of cell phone customers did not receive the test message Wednesday.

"There are a couple of providers, for instance, Telus, they did not have their systems in proper order to nobody got the notice who was with Telus. And there were a few glitches with the other providers. But, let me put it to you this way: in so far as tests go, this test would be deemed as successful. It probably wouldn't get us into medical school, but it was successful."

Schuler adds he is not concerned about the problems that showed up.

"That's why you have tests right? You have tests to see where there could be failings in the system and where you have to improve. And we were very happy to put our technology to use. And, in so far as the Emergency Measures Organization is concerned, all of what we had to do worked 100 percent."

Schuler says the problems with the cell phone delivery system will need to be fixed and that process will be coordinated by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission.
